Paris in October - TARGET at the European Microwave Week 2005

The involvement of TARGET in international conferences is rapidly increasing. At this year’s European Microwave Week our network organised a TARGET focused session, a one-day workshop, the NVNA users’ forum, and a TARGET tutorial. On top of this we presented TARGET at the microwave exhibition offering our educational services for the first time.

On Tuesday, October 4, we started with our focused session on “PA and TRX characterisation, modelling and design within the NoE TARGET”. Although it was rather early in the morning after having had a splendid gala dinner organised by the GAAS® association at the evening before and the public transportation being on strike, we had an audience of 50 on the average. The five contributions of the focused session concentrated mainly on the results of the first 18 months of TARGET.

The TARGET scientific event of the next day was the workshop on “Black box modelling based on vectorial large signal network analysis” that was put together by me with the highly appreciated help of Markus Mayer. We had a total of six presentations that were distributed over the whole day to allow ample time for questions and discussions. Of course, all presentations were scientifically delightful as they were given by the top experts in the field, but if you ask for the “extra mile” then invite Yves Rolain and Alain Barel to perform their fabulous pas de deux…

Since last year every other NVNA users’ forum is jointly organised by TARGET and ARFTG. This year’s autumn meeting was attached to the EuMW on Thursday evening and it dealt with ongoing research at the University of Limoges / IRCOM and at the University of Vigo. Additionally, the results of a NVNA round robin were presented along with a proposal for improvements of the procedure. Again, the TARGET community turns out as a platform most suitable for common activities to improve the reliability of PA measurement and characterisation.

Finally, on Friday a TARGET tutorial on “Front end sampler technology” was organised by Marc Vanden Bossche. This event was attended by 21 TARGET participants who learned that the sampler – after having been replaced for quite a while by mixers – is alive and back on the stage of advanced characterisation techniques for RF components in nonlinear operation.

The absolute highlight, however, was the TARGET booth at the exhibition. If you want to know more, don’t miss Sue’s account on our first appearance at company level!

TARGET with educational and characterisation services at the European Microwave Exhibition 2005

For the first time TARGET was present with a booth at the European Microwave Exhibition offering educational and characterisation services.

To put it in a nutshell - this event was a big success!

The interest in our Network of Excellence is very strong as was demonstrated by the high number of visitors: many company representatives stopped by in order to get information on our service offers or to learn more about TARGET and possible ways to participate. Moreover, the - in the meantime proverbial - good TARGET spirit was highly visible as the booth was populated at all times by TARGET partners. On top of that we were happy to notice an increased interest of the press as was illustrated by three press inquiries.

To summarize, TARGET is not only involved increasingly in the scientific community but it showed that our know-how and our services are also of great interest beyond the academic world.
