TARGET Association

TARGET is more active than ever, although the end of our funding period comes close. To open a possibility for staying together after year 4 we founded the TARGET Association - a non-profit organisation - which will be our vehicle to achieve durability beyond FP6. Its aims will be to advance research and technical development in the fields of microwaves, amplifiers, semiconductor systems, telecommunications and information technology, including training in these fields. Further to this, it shall design new common research projects, and enable us to keep our excellent contacts with industry.

The Association offers membership to institutions in very much the same way as universities, research centres, and companies are members in the present TARGET consortium. We envisage an annual fee of 3k€ for universities and 5k€ for companies. What will be the benefits of membership? At present, we plan to

  • maintain our home page
  • update our shared knowledge centre regularly
  • publish news from our members
  • organise TARGET special events at the EuMW
  • launch new research proposals
  • lobby for the microwave industry at EC level.

We are also delighted to inform you that the TARGET logo has been successfully registered as trademark which is protected in all member states of the European Union. In short words: We shall keep the TARGET identity and the TARGET brand of cooperation and quality!

If we sparked your interest, please, check the statutes of the association with your university / department / company and please, let us know if you are seriously interested in joining the TARGET Association. Furthermore, we would like to announce that a very first General Assembly is planned for December 17 (at the event of the TARGET Days in Frascati).

Announcement of 2 new Strategic Exchanges

We are pleased to announce 2 new Strategic Exchanges to be held in October - November 2007:

3rd Strategic Exchange:

Date:22-26 October 2007
Title: "III-arsenide & III-nitride based MMICs" (focused on clean room on site courses and fabrication)
Organiser: Foundation for Research & Technology Hellas (FORTH)
Location:Heraklion, Crete, Greece
Contact: Dr George Konstantinidis (aek@physics.uoc.gr)
cc Dr Rodoula Makri, WP leader (rodia@esd.ece.ntua.gr)

4th Strategic Exchange:

Date:5-9 November 2007
Title: "Hands-on Course on NonLinear Model Development and Microwave CAD Design" (focused on design CAD issues using the AWR CAD environment)
Organiser: ETSIT University of Málaga (UMA)
Location:Málaga, Spain
Contact: Dr Teresa M. Martín-Guerrero (teresa@ic.uma.es)
cc Dr Rodoula Makri, WP leader (rodia@esd.ece.ntua.gr)

Both Strategic Exchanges address people (post docs, post graduate students, researchers, members of staff etc) with basic background in the given topics that would like to broaden their knowledge in these areas through personal training. Please take into consideration that we can accept up to 5 attendees for each of the above mentioned events.

We believe that both Strategic Exchanges are highly attractive opportunities to gain knowledge in specific practical areas! We would welcome if you encouraged your staff to apply for these events. Exchangers who are willing to participate may send us short CVs, briefly describing their background knowledge to the respective contact persons as well as to the WP leader Rodoula Makri.

Change of WP leadership 1.2 and 1.4

We would like to inform you that Markus Mayer, WP leader of Pools and Tutorials, will leave Vienna University of Technology in October to accept a new challenge. He will start working at a company located in France, and we all wish him the very best for this change. Luckily, he will still be around at the EuMW, at a Strategic Exchange, and who knows, maybe also the TARGET Days! Thanks for all your effort, Markus!

Our sincere thanks also go to Jean-Pierre Teyssier (UL) who will be taking over WP 1.2 Pools, and to Giovanni Ghione (POLITO CERCOM) who will lead WP 1.4 Tutorials, the change will become effective with October 1st.

The Network of Excellence TARGET - Top Amplifier Research Groups in a European Team was created within FP6 of the European Commission in 2004, with the aim to coordinate, address, and join research efforts in the field of microwave amplifier research. In four years TARGET has become a new European standard for joint research, demonstrating the capabilities to transform a preliminary idea into actual results, achieving state of the art in topics ranging from device technology to device characterisation and modelling, from design of power amplifiers and linearisers to transmitter and system design for broadband wireless access.

The aim of this conclusive event is to highlight the major outcomes and successful results achieved in TARGET.

The event is organised in the frame of the international conference ISMOT'07, and it is offered also to non TARGET members (industry, academia, or European Commission members) who wish to know such a successful Network of Excellence.

Therefore, technical papers describing original work in research, development and application arising from TARGET activities are solicited in the following topics:

1. Semiconductor Materials and Devices
2. Device Characterisation and Modelling
3. Amplifier Design
4. Amplifier Linearisation
5. Amplifier Modelling
6. Transmitter Architecture and Modelling
7. TARGET Future

DeLFI initiative

TARGET DeLFI is an initiative to improve Power Amplifiers monolithic design and their realisation by creating a single interface between TARGET Members and European Foundries, and providing technological support in performing and/or refining PA designs.

The purpose of DeLFI is to establish a centre committed to coordinating different TARGET members, interfacing a chosen Foundry, assuring proper design and providing layout assistance.

The folder R&D Services and DeLFI now offers downloads of the foundries' processes.
